A Couple of Free Winter Workshops
Community Energy Project and North Portland Tool Library are excited to present a couple free workshops to help you lower your energy bills
during the winter months.
Both workshops are free to the public and will take place on the main floor of the Kenton Firehouse located at 2209 N Schofield
 

DIY Weatherization Workshop
Do-It-Yourself Weatherization Workshop on
Thursday, October 12th, from 6:00-8:00pm
 
This interactive, hands-on weatherization workshop will give you the tools to make your home warmer and more energy-efficient, while lowering your electricity bill! Income-qualifying workshop participants can pick up a free weatherization kit immediately after the workshop; non-income-qualified participants can purchase the kit from Community Energy Project for a reduced price. We look forward to seeing you there!
 

DIY Insulation Workshop

Tuesday November 7th from 6-8pm
 
Learn how to insulate a flat attic, step-by-step. This workshop will go over air sealing, safety precautions, ventilation, insulation, and incentives, as well as common terms used by contractors.

Restore Oregon is excited to announce that we are launching
a campaign to Re-TURN the Jantzen Beach Carousel!

After spending five years on our list of Oregon’s Most Endangered Places, Restore Oregon is pleased to announce that we have taken ownership of the historic Jantzen Beach Carousel.  Today we are launching a campaign to Re-TURN the Carousel to the people of Portland, and asking for everyone’s support to find it a permanent home.

Restore Oregon placed the Jantzen Beach Carousel on our annual list of Oregon’s Most Endangered Places in 2012. It was nominated by concerned citizens when the Carousel was shut down and dismantled for the remodel of the Jantzen Beach Shopping Center – with no indication it would ever be reinstalled.

Our efforts to reach out to and work with the owners of the mall did not bear fruit, until recently. The property was being sold, and Edens Corporation reached out to us with an offer to donate the carousel to Restore Oregon. We accepted this very generous offer, and ownership officially transferred to Restore Oregon on September 1st.  

Now the hard work begins!
It is no small task to find a new permanent home for our beloved carousel.  We need a place, a plan, and a fair amount of money to offset the substantial costs involved in this initial phase. Donations will be used to help cover staff time and the out-of-pocket costs necessary to finding the carousel a new home such as a feasibility study to analyze and recommend locations, a conceptual design for the structure that will house it, and a business model for how it will operate and who will own it.  

Now Its Time to Re-TURN the Jantzen Beach Carousel to the Portland Area!
This priceless emblem of our cultural heritage also represents a significant opportunity for economic development, attracting thousands of visitors and tourists, and providing a much-needed family-friendly activity during rainy months.
 
A blue-ribbon committee of local leaders has been formed to help us identify a new site and long-term strategy for the carousel that ensures its accessibility to future generations.  Former State Senator Margaret Carter, and Oregon “Premier Citizen” Gerry Frank are serving as honorary co-chairs.

  • Share your memories & photos on twitter, facebook, and instagram – We need to demonstrate grass-roots community support to bring it back.

  • Sign-up for our newsletter – keep up-to-date on the latest carousel happenings.

  • Contact us – We invite businesses or non-profits that might have a potential site for the carousel to contact us. We ask government leaders to consider the carousel in their plans.

  • Donate to support our effort – we need your financial support as we take on this preservation effort.

Pressing On: The Letterpress Film
 

The C.C. Stern Type Foundry is partnering with other area institutions to bring a screening of Pressing On:The Letterpress Film to Portland. Co-presenters include Oregon College of Art & Craft, Pacific Northwest College of Art, the American Amateur Press Association, and the Independent Publishing Resource Center. The film will be followed by a panel discussion/Q&A with area letterpress printers.

The modern world was born on a printing press. Once essential to communication, the 500-year-old process is now in danger of being lost as its caretakers age. From self-proclaimed basement hoarders to the famed Hatch Show Print, Pressing On: The Letterpress Film explores the question: why has letterpress survived?

“Pressing On” has been reviewed as beautifully capturing the art and technology of letterpress printing and preserving important voices in this craft for generations to come. This preservation is enhanced by the exquisite camerawork, lighting and music. Steven Heller, former art director at the New York Times, wrote that “‘Pressing On’ is an essential document not just about a revolutionary means of human interaction, but to savor the passion of its practitioners.”

The public premiere of the film was held this summer at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, home of Hatch Show Print. The film is a joint collaboration between Erin Beckloff and Andrew P. Quinn, co-directors, Kevin Grazioli, producer, and Joe Vella, director of photography. Bayonet Media, an Indianapolis-based video production company, is producing the project. Beckloff, now a tenured track assistant professor of Graphic Design at Miami University, developed an interest in letterpress after receiving a historic printing press as a wedding gift. Curious and inspired, in 2010 Beckloff began to record interviews with printers in the letterpress community. Her focus then shifted to capturing their stories on film, and in late 2013, she partnered with Quinn, Grazioli, and Vella at Bayonet Media to create the “Pressing On” documentary.
